100 Questions to Ask Yourself to Get in Tune With Your Life Purpose

The Egg

A couple years ago on Easter, my roommates and I had an intense egg hunt.

There were 80 total eggs, but after extensive searching, there was still 1 egg missing.

No one could find the egg, so my friend who had hid the eggs had to go find it himself.

He searched for nearly an hour, but for the life of him could not remember where he hid it.

After all of us had either forgotten about or stopped caring about the egg, my friend continued to rack his brain, trying to remember where he put the egg, but kept coming up empty.

I woke up the next morning with a text from him, sent at 3 in the morning, saying “I REMEMBER WHERE I PUT THE EGG”

He had woken up in the middle of the night with the direct insight on where he had hid the egg.

Sure enough, the egg was exactly where he thought it was.

The point in this is that when you ask yourself a question with the deep intention to find an answer, both your conscious and your subconscious mind go to work on solving the problem.

My friend could have let the thought of the egg go, but he kept his determination to find it, and sure enough, his subconscious mind figured it out while he was asleep.

The Power of Asking Questions

Asking questions (aka contemplation) is a highly underrated method when it comes to developing yourself. It is an absolute game-changer when it comes to accelerating the process of finding and actualizing your life purpose.

My life purpose was completely catalyzed by this method. I would not be where I am today without my decision to start a stream of consciousness journal and to make it a regular habit to go on contemplative walks in nature.

When I first took up these habits, I was a teenager who didn’t have much of a clue what I wanted out of life.

But I knew deep down that there was something more to this mysterious experience of being alive, and that the conventional path needed to be questioned.

I would write in my journal and I would go on walks asking myself deep questions, imagining future scenarios, and trying to make some sort of plan to make life extraordinary.

In this journal and on these walks, I would question things from as small as “how do I attract this girl I have a crush on?” to as large as “what is the nature of reality?”

Through this process, I realized how insanely powerful the mind is. I would say the mind became, and still is, my greatest tool.

While I was not aware of this back in my teenage days, contemplation, for the most part, is a passive process.

The only active part is your intention to find answers to the questions you ask. The rest is simply watching your mind go to work at generating an answer, and noticing the feelings that arise as your mind tries to figure it out.

Your mind, fueled by the desire to seek a solution, literally does all the work for you.

In the case of my friend, he deeply wanted to know where he had hid the egg. His mind went to work, and while he was asleep, his subconscious mind finally figured it out.

However, when it comes to life purpose, you are asking questions that do not always have a clear-cut answer like the case of the egg did.

You aren’t going to wake up one morning with deep, clear insight on what your life purpose is and how you’re going to get there.

But you can set aside time for contemplation on a regular basis, take note of your feelings (your intuition) by feeling into your fears, noticing when you close up, noticing what excites you, what seems authentic, and following what ultimately feels the most right.

When it comes to gaining clarity regarding your life purpose, I invite you to step deeply into a place of not-knowing.

It is from this place of not-knowing that the fountain of insight is birthed.

When you step into this state, you allow your mind to go to work on finding an answer, but also open your intuition towards feeling what is right.

Be patient. Allow your mind to work. Always keep an open-mind. Don’t cling to and run with the first thought that seems hopeful.

The questions you ask yourself when it comes to accelerating your self-actualization process are the big questions in life. You won’t find all the answers in a day, week, month, or even a year.

The process of self-actualization is one of constant questioning and consistent taking of action.

You aren’t going to generate some perfect, grand plan in your mind before you ever take a single action. That will never work. That’s just mental masturbation.

The vision unfolds as you take action based on your contemplation.

Oftentimes the right answer is a feeling that you ought to try a certain thing, to read a particular book or watch a video, to try out a new habit, etc.

It is very rare to have a life-changing, soul-penetrating insight that washes over your entire being and rings true to your deepest core.

I’ve had a few insights like this in my life, and when I did, I kept trying to chase the next one, and the next one…until I realized I was just chasing spiritual highs and that these insights are rare for a reason.

Take these insights when you do get them, but recognize that the process mostly happens in baby steps that amass into something large over time.

So, by continually asking yourself these questions from a place of not-knowing, you’re constantly giving space for your mind to figure out how to live your best life.

But, remember that contemplation is a tool. Do not allow it to become an obsession.

Allowing contemplation to become an obsession will lead to overthinking, which will lead to stress, anxiety, and eventually depression.

But still, make it a habit to contemplate. Whether it’s starting a journal, going on walks, sitting in silence, or all of them, make the conscious decision to set aside time on a regular basis with the sole intention to ask yourself questions on how to live your best life.

Now that you’ve got a solid foundation on how to direct your contemplation, head to the bottom of this post to see “100 Questions to Get in Tune With Your Life Purpose.”
